Being in a place where the culture you are part of is prevalent within the location is very important for making connections and the early game of building something. But unfortunately, in the UK there is only one main place that is full of hip-hop talent that we are interested in working with. That’s obviously London. We are about 4 hours travel away from London which is annoying because we would love to be in a location that is only at max like 2 hours away. It makes things so much more difficult when there are things in place that can halt progress with development in projects. Timing can really be a bugger as well as there is the chance that people’s dates don’t align and sacrifices cannot be made to work with getting there. It happens but it sucks when it does because one person can feel like they are letting another down but in truth people have some sort of priorities and limitations all the time so it can be a stretch to work towards an efficient completion of the task.
The dream is to have an office space in London that we can afford comfortably and work with as many people as we can
With it being a limitation, it can also work in your favour with things falling in place when they need to and locations working in your favour with closeness or accessibility. Currently my team are in the same town as me so it is easy to meet up and be able work on our own stuff but we still have things such as school and work that get in the way of us collaborating as much as we maybe want to. I think a lot of patience comes with creating content in this sort of stage because there is no office space or official workplace, salaries or bonuses apart from us building up our own portfolios of work and also building a business that hopefully can be something special in the future. The dream is to have an office space in London that we can afford comfortably and work with as many people as we can to make all of the content and be the main source of news, entertainment and video production in the UK while throwing shows and selling merch as well. But that all comes down to timing. Will I send the DM to an artist at a time of day where they are feeling generous and give us the opportunity to work with them to create something. It is all luck really and we can only do our best to put ourselves in the best location possible and have faith that our timing is correct to things that are happening around us. It is why I always spend some time during the day to scout for new artists in the same culture we are in to see if they have anything we can work with them on because I love the satisfaction of helping someone and we just end up building our network more and more through that which allows us to have options for future projects.
I think that at WhyY we just have to work around our lack of time and make sure we use it as efficiently as possible
Are they things you can control? Kinda but not really. Location and timing are things that are always changing around you without you even knowing. We’ve experienced now by connecting with artists who are just this moment looking for visuals for songs off their new album and boom there I am in their DM’s offering it for free. Location you have to adapt to even though it can be hard. I think that at WhyY we just have to work around our lack of time and make sure we use it as efficiently as possible. It’s a good training method for the long term because once we get into a position where we can do these projects at a more rapid rate it will be even better for us as we have had experience with working with a smaller time frame.
